Known by many local names Okra is fast becoming a 'staple' in Australian gardens.
Okra grows well in all states but in most areas of Queensland and northern NSW it can be grown all year round.
Easy to maintain and quite self sufficient, it's hibiscus like flowers give way to the long tapered fruit.
If picked within 3-4 days of flowering, and steamed very lightly with maybe a little butter, it is delicious.
If the fruit grows on for longer than that it can be added to stews and casseroles.
