Orignally a West African native, the Scarlet Eggplant has become quite naturalized throughout the America's and Europe.
Like most of the Aubergine family it is a short lived perennial and will happily produce for several years.
It can comfortably grow to 1.5m tall with a 1m spread but we keep ours well pruned to encourage the lateral fruiting branches.
Probably because it seems to take so very long for the fruit to change from green to red, it is often picked and eaten when the fruit is quite green.
Green fruit has a slightly sweeter taste and picking thus can double the yeild of the plant.
They are frost tender but will survive a frosty winter to pick up again in Spring.
